Last Sunday, May 5th was the annual “Byward Barket” in Ottawa. It is a free event filled of shopping and supporting the local shops in the Byward Market through a series of pet friendly events. Along with amazing stores like Cricket and Company were local animal rescues and non-profits like us, the Ottawa Paw Pantry!
At our booth we were raising awareness in the community about how we collect and distribute pet food for animals in need. We had a raffle for a $25 Starbucks gift card and our winner was Iris who chose lucky number 37! We also gave away delicious homemade dog treats (recipes at the bottom of this post).
One of the most memorable parts of our day was meeting some incredible past beneficiaries of our services. These folks shared the impact the Ottawa Paw Pantry had on their family’s life with us. It was touching for us to hear firsthand how we helped out someone in need.
In total, we raised a staggering $321 thanks to the generous support of all the pets and owners who dropped by the “Byward Barket”! We couldn’t have done it without you all and we can’t wait to see you at our next event: Weinerpalooza on Saturday, July 20th at Carlington Park!
Don’t forget we accept food donations at many drop Off Locations across the city as well as monetary donations through CanadaHelps.com. Every bit helps!

Homemade dog treat recipes
Banana Pumpkin
Ingredients
- 1 banana
- 1 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling!)
- 1 cup flour
- Optional: 1 tbsp honey
Directions
- Mix all the ingredients together (I use a blender to smooth the banana). Add more flour or some water to get the right consistency. Should be a soft dough, along the lines of cookie dough.
- Put into silicone moulds. Bake at 350° for about 10 minutes
- If you don’t have moulds, make the dough a bit tougher (add more flour) and you can simply roll it out and use cookie cutters to make shapes. Bake on a cookie tray lined with parchment paper at 350° for about 10 minutes
